I spent 13 years in that little school on Esdras Place in Riverside .... from Edith Cavel Public School - Grade 1 to Grade 13 in Riverside High School ..... all in one building. My sister Eunice and I walked to school in the morning, walked home for lunch, walked back to school after lunch, than walked home after school was over at 4PM. The weather made NO difference - we walked!!
We played outside after school and after supper, we had to come in when the street lights came on. We swam in the Detroit River and played on the street or in an empty lot. In the winter Mr. Girard would flood his back yard, so we could skate and play hockey. Ours was a carefree and happy childhood.
As a teenager, I spent alot of time at the Barlow's house. They were our neighbours and welcomed us kids. Their door was always open. I wonder now , how Hec and Charlotte stood it! We would pour out all of our problems and heartaches .... they listened to our love affairs, our new boy friends, our troubles at school, our fights with our parents etc. etc. They listened and always understood our side, even though many times they must have laughed to themselves.
It was a wonderful time growing up in our little town of Riverside and spending so many years in one school - where you knew everyone and everyone knew you. Granted, we didn't have a TV or cell phone or a computer with e-mail - but we had so much else!
